Nelson Mandela said, “education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world”. The members of PAOBA are always striving to advance the alpaca industry through education. The best way for us to do that is through hands-on work at our farms and gathering together regularly to learn and share ideas. Our Education Committee provides us with a platform to do that. Every summer we hold a Summer Seminar open to members, non-members, alpaca owners/breeders, and enthusiasts. Basically, we meet (without animals) and learn from the experts about a variety of topics such as writing a business plan, veterinarian issues, showmanship, fiber, and nutrition to name a few. It is a great time of focus and fun and we encourage you to check it out. See Summer Seminar for more details and save the date on your calendar to attend the next one.
We generally offer some form of education at the Breeder’s Showcase. In the past it has been in a formal classroom setting, but more recently we have moved to a learning booth geared toward educating the broader public as well as our show attendees. There is so much to know about alpacas. The public comes out in large numbers to the Breeder’s Showcase in York every year to see the alpacas and learn more. Vendors and Exhibitors have lots of knowledge as well and will gladly speak to you from their booth. All you have to do is engage.
Of course, we have reliable Social Media and technology at our fingertips. If you use Facebook, ‘Like’ PAOBA’s page and Paca Games. Both of these PAOBA-managed pages and many others like them that are dedicated to fiber, equipment, shows, etc. keep us in the public eye. It is a chance for us to answer questions, give accurate information, be the expert in the field. Ex. Yes, alpacas do spit and here’s why… No, alpacas do not lay eggs and don’t appreciate being milked daily… Yes, llamas and alpacas are different…. No, alpacas and emus are not interchangeable.
If you’d like to participate on the PAOBA Education Committee or if you have suggestions for upcoming events/topics, please fill in the form below or feel free to contact either of the Co-Chairs. You can also email us [email protected]
We love to hear from you and appreciate your input! Thanks.
